The Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General, María Ángela Holguín, is due to meet the European Commission’s Executive Vice-President for Cohesion and Reforms, Raffaele Fitto, in Brussels at 14:00 local time on Wednesday.
Fitto recently assumed the additional role of the European Union’s Special Representative for the Cyprus issue.
The meeting comes as diplomatic efforts on the Cyprus talks continue ahead of the upcoming visit of UN Secretary-General António Guterres to the island.
Kallas reaffirms EU support
On Tuesday, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas held a telephone conversation with Holguín.
In a post following the call, Kallas said the European Union remains firmly committed to supporting the United Nations’ efforts to achieve a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus issue.
She described the conversation as “a good phone call” ahead of Holguín’s visit to Brussels on Wednesday and the forthcoming visit of the UN Secretary-General to Cyprus.
Diplomatic momentum continues
The Brussels meeting is part of ongoing diplomatic contacts aimed at supporting the UN-led process on the Cyprus issue.
It also reflects the European Union’s continued engagement with UN efforts as preparations continue for the Secretary-General’s visit to the island and the next phase of discussions on the Cyprus talks.
