A 50-year-old businessman from Gällivare, believed to be a central figure in a major corporate tax scandal in Malmfälten, may be extradited from Cyprus to Sweden for questioning, according to Swedish newspaper Norrländska Socialdemokraten.
Prosecutor Mikael Bäckström told the paper that efforts have already begun through Eurojust, the EU’s judicial cooperation agency. “I’ve started pulling some strings and made contact via Eurojust,” he said, in reference to the ongoing investigation.
As noted by the blog Hyperboreoi, the businessman was sentenced earlier this summer to 18 months in prison in Cyprus. This means he could be extradited to Sweden as early as 6 March next year.
According to the report, the 50-year-old is suspected of multiple counts of serious tax evasion, fraud, and major violations of accounting laws. “The man from Gällivare has not yet been questioned in relation to the written evidence we’ve gathered,” Bäckström emphasised.
The case in Malmfälten has been described by Dagens Industri as one of Sweden’s largest ongoing investigations into financial crime.
