A bus train collision killed one person and injured 11 others when a bus collided with a freight train in Russia’s Leningrad region near Saint Petersburg on Monday, the regional railway administration said.
According to officials, the driver of the bus entered the level crossing ahead of an approaching freight train. “The train driver applied emergency braking, but the distance was too short to prevent a bus train collision,” the railway administration of the Leningrad region said in a statement on Telegram.
The railway authority stated that the bus was operating a regular route. However, Russia’s state news agency RIA, citing the local prosecutor’s office, reported that it was a tourist bus.
“According to preliminary information, 12 passengers on the bus were injured, and one of them later succumbed to their injuries,” the regional railway authority added.
The incident is under investigation.
