Passenger placed under isolation in Milan
A British tourist has been admitted to the Sacco Hospital in Milan and placed in quarantine for 40 days after being exposed to hantavirus during a long-haul flight.
The passenger reportedly came into contact with an elderly woman on a flight bound for Johannesburg, who later died after being infected with the virus.
Italian health authorities acted following an alert issued by the UK Department of Health.
Second suspected case under investigation in Sicily
In a separate incident in Messina, Sicily, an Argentine tourist suffering from pneumonia is undergoing laboratory tests to determine whether she has contracted a hantavirus strain.
She arrived in Italy 10 days ago from an area in Argentina where the virus is considered endemic.
Health monitoring underway
Authorities are now carrying out epidemiological checks and contact tracing to assess potential exposure risks linked to both cases.
Hantavirus infections are typically rare but can cause severe respiratory illness depending on the strain.
