The helicopter crews of the British Bases in Cyprus have praised the recent fire-fighting exercise “Hephaestus”, which was conducted under the coordination of the Republic of Cyprus, saying they are now fully prepared to support operations during the summer period.
The crews operate Chinook helicopters from the RAF’s 1310 Flight at RAF Akrotiri and completed their training on 1 May. The exercise provided an opportunity to put their skills into practice alongside Cyprus Republic forces.
Stronger coordination ahead of fire season
According to Squadron Leader Joel Babbage, Commander of 1310 Flight, the exercise proved highly valuable in strengthening interoperability with Cyprus’ fire-fighting capabilities.
He said the drill provided a realistic environment for integrating procedures, communications and tactical coordination between all participating forces, improving joint operational planning.
The collaboration also enhanced understanding of each side’s operational methods, allowing for more effective combined responses.
Chinook ready for rapid deployment
Ahead of the fire season, the British Bases will keep a Chinook helicopter on standby for immediate deployment.
Squadron Leader Babbage described the aircraft as highly suitable for aerial fire-fighting operations due to its heavy-lift capability and performance in challenging conditions, including high temperatures and difficult terrain.
He added that the crews are highly trained and experienced, with skills developed through their primary operational roles, including precision flying, load handling and situational awareness.
Key asset for aerial fire-fighting
Babbage said the combination of aircraft capability and crew expertise makes the Chinook a reliable and effective platform for aerial fire suppression.
The exercise is part of broader cooperation between Cyprus and British Bases aimed at strengthening emergency response capacity during periods of increased wildfire risk.
