British Andy Milne sells home to make World Cup trip possible

Date:

A 63-year-old British World Cup fan, Andy Milne, widely recognised as “That World Cup Guy,” has become a global internet sensation due to his extreme dedication to attending football’s biggest tournament.

Milne, a retired teacher, has revealed that he sold his home as part of his long-term retirement plan to fund his upcoming trip to North America for what will be his 10th FIFA World Cup.

From classroom to global stadiums

The former biology teacher and football coach gained viral attention during the 2022 Qatar World Cup, where cameras repeatedly spotted him in the stands holding a golden replica trophy he calls “Sophie the Trophy”.

Speaking to People, Milne said his life revolves around football and the World Cup experience, which he has followed across multiple continents over the years.

Despite rumours about his wealth and financial situation, he clarified that the property sale had been misreported.

House sale and travel plans

Milne explained that the house in Northwich, near Manchester, had not been his primary residence for over a decade and was part of a retirement strategy rather than a rushed sale.

He added that the proceeds would help fund future travel, including a planned trip to Australia to visit his new grandchild.

Viral fame in Qatar 2022

During England’s matches in Qatar, Milne became a familiar face to television audiences worldwide.

His repeated appearances in the crowd quickly earned him the nickname “That World Cup Guy”, a label that has since followed him across social media and international media coverage.

Extreme travel stories and new book

Milne has now published a book titled That World Cup Guy, released on 25 May by Pitch Publishing, documenting his football travels.

The book goes beyond sport, featuring unusual and often extreme personal stories, including falling off an ostrich in South Africa, drinking whisky with alleged smugglers in Zimbabwe, and getting lost in a Brazilian favela while travelling with German supporters.

Still playing football at 63

Despite his age, Milne continues to play football weekly with friends, describing himself with humour as someone who still believes he performs like Pelé on the pitch, even if his knees disagree.

Preparing for another World Cup journey

Now preparing for his next World Cup adventure in North America, Milne has already mapped out extensive travel plans across the United States, including stops in cities such as Boston and Dallas.

As a member of the England Supporters Travel Club, he intends to follow the national team as far as possible in the tournament.

“Football is everything”

For Milne, the World Cup is more than a sporting event—it is a way of life.

As he puts it, the journey, the people and the unpredictability of the tournament are what make it unforgettable, as he prepares once again to follow England on football’s biggest stage.
