A monthly breast cancer allowance for vulnerable patients during treatment and for up to 12 months afterwards, along with free transport for patients from remote areas of Nicosia district to oncology centres, are among two new measures announced by the state.
President Nikos Christodoulides announced the measures during the Pink Figures Walk on Saturday, describing them as the first interventions aimed at supporting patients facing breast cancer.
According to the President, the measures were proposed by Europa Donna Cyprus President and the organisation’s Board of Directors.
Questions over support for other cancers
The announcement prompted a number of reactions, particularly on social media, from patients with other forms of cancer who questioned why they would not receive similar financial support.
SigmaLive sought clarification from the government, conveying the concerns raised by patients with other types of cancer.
The government said the initiative with breast cancer patients marks the beginning of a wider approach.
According to the clarification provided, the support will be expanded to other citizens on the basis of specific criteria.
