Bill passed mandating vehicle move after minor accidents

Mandatory vehicle movement after minor accidents

The Cyprus House of Representatives has approved a bill proposed by DISY MP Demetris Demetriou, amending the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Law. Under the new provisions, drivers involved in road collisions must move their vehicles if the prescribed conditions are met.

Violations now offenses

Failure to move a vehicle, not following required procedures, or attempting to coerce others into violating the law now constitute offenses. The amendment addresses gaps in enforcement caused by the previous requirement for driver consent, which could be exploited by insurance companies encouraging non-compliance.

Legislative intent and debate

During the parliamentary debate, MP Demetriou stated that the law fixes shortcomings in the legislation passed last summer and will reduce traffic confusion caused by minor collisions. AKEL MP Valentinos Fakontis acknowledged the objective but expressed concern that the amendment shifts additional responsibility onto drivers, potentially creating new issues.
