Ayia Napa harassment allegations investigated after documentary

Claims involving British seasonal workers

Ayia Napa harassment allegations involving young British women working in the resort are being investigated following claims aired in a documentary by Channel 4.

The documentary refers to reports of poor working and housing conditions, as well as allegations of sexual harassment involving young women from the UK who travel to Cyprus through a specific recruitment office to work in Ayia Napa.

Mayor: incidents do not reflect whole area

Speaking to CyBC (RIK), Ayia Napa Mayor Christos Zanettou said he does not exclude the possibility of isolated incidents, but stressed that such cases do not represent the overall picture of the resort.

He noted that Ayia Napa is an international tourist destination that welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.

Municipality to act on accommodation concerns

Zanettou said the municipality will move to identify unsuitable premises where seasonal workers may be housed, in order for formal complaints to be submitted and the issue addressed.

He also said there will be direct communication with the Minister of Justice and Public Order and with the Chief of Police, to identify any individual businesses operating unlawfully and ensure appropriate measures are taken.

Police confirm investigation

In a statement, police said that following media reports concerning the possible commission of criminal offences in the free Famagusta area, an investigation has been launched on their own initiative.

Police said enquiries are ongoing into the allegations raised in the documentary.

Undercover reporting

As part of the documentary, an undercover Channel 4 journalist travelled to Cyprus and used hidden cameras to document practices in the area.

The journalist claims that owners of nightlife venues in Ayia Napa offered her employment in exchange for sexual favours. She also reports that in many cases young British women are paid minimal wages, are unaware that they are working illegally, and are subjected to threats.

The documentary notes that similar practices have been recorded in other parts of Europe.
