Athens hosts “Orange Week” against gender-based violence

Date:

The City of Athens will host “Orange Week Athens,” a week-long series of events themed “Art Against Gender-Based Violence,” from 18 to 25 November. The event is being held in conjunction with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on 25 November and is organised by the Municipality of Athens in collaboration with the Centre for Combating Gender-Based Violence and Multiple Discrimination.

Throughout the week, the city will feature a variety of performances, film screenings, concerts, art exhibitions, and talks to engage and inform the public on the pressing issue of gender violence. All events are free as part of the United Nations global campaign to raise awareness on violence against women.

“Athens’s commitment to social responsibility is at the heart of this initiative,” said Mayor Haris Doukas. “Art can act as a catalyst for change. I encourage all Athenians—artists, creatives, and citizens alike—to join us in this important fight. We must work together to inspire, raise awareness, and ultimately put an end to gender-based violence.”

Deputy Mayor for Social Solidarity and Equality, Maria Stratigaki, noted, “Orange Week, with its symbolic colour, underscores the City of Athens’s dedication to mobilising the entire community in the fight against gender violence. Through theatre, documentaries, discussions, concerts, and awareness-raising activities, we are united in delivering the same message: Athens must be free from violence against women.”

Eleni Zontirou, President of the City of Athens Cultural, Sports, and Youth Organisation, added, “The fight to eliminate violence against women is not only a goal but a commitment to every woman striving to live with dignity and safety. Art becomes a weapon against silence and injustice, giving voice and strength to those who stand up against violence. Together, let us build a future where violence against women is nothing but a dark memory.”
