Astromeritis–Evrychou highway opens this afternoon

Date:

The Astromeritis-Evrychou highway is officially handed over to the public on Thursday at 17:00, marking a key milestone for Cyprus’ mountainous regions.

The project completes Phase IV of the Nicosia–Troodos road axis, a long-awaited development for communities in Solea, Marathasa and Pitsilia.

The Astromeritis-Evrychou highway spans 11.3 kilometres and cost €88.63 million. The Cybarco–Pharmakas joint venture completed the project under the supervision of the Public Works Department.

The highway includes four traffic lanes, an overpass junction in Koutrafas, a terminal roundabout and a 750-metre viaduct.

Officials highlight the use of recycled asphalt materials, marking a first for Cyprus in major road construction and supporting more sustainable infrastructure development.

Faster access and regional impact

The new road significantly reduces travel time to and from Nicosia, improving daily commuting for residents of mountain villages.

The Astromeritis-Evrychou highway also improves access to hospitals, universities and public services, strengthening connectivity for rural communities.

Local areas are expected to benefit economically as improved accessibility encourages tourism, supports small businesses and attracts new residents, particularly young families.

Officials describe the project as more than a transport link, saying it connects villages to the city and the city back to the mountains.

The aim is to reduce urban migration and support sustainable development in rural Cyprus.

The Public Works Department has also committed to additional safety improvements at key exits following feedback from local communities.

Future expansion plans

The next phase, covering the Deneia–Astromeritis section, is expected to be tendered by September.

Once completed, the full Nicosia–Troodos axis will extend to 18 kilometres with a total cost of around €110 million plus VAT.
