Applications for electronic identity begin – All the details

Date:

Applications for the National Electronic Identity (eID) open today, Monday, for Cypriot citizens over 18 years old who hold a Biometric Identity Card.

During a presentation last week, the Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, Nikodimos Damianou, stated that the government is subsidising 100,000 electronic identities for Cypriot citizens. The first 30,000 eIDs will be provided free of charge, prioritised based on the order of applications, while the remaining 70,000 will have a final cost of €15 for citizens.

Mr Damianou explained that the eID is each citizen’s unique and secure identity in the online world. It enables authentication for public and private online services and allows users to sign electronic documents securely, with the same legal validity as a handwritten signature.

The electronic signature feature has already been integrated into the Ippodamos system and is planned to be gradually implemented in other state systems, such as the Department of Registrar of Companies and Intellectual Property and the Department of Road Transport, which are currently in the implementation phase.

In the initial phase, by obtaining their eID, citizens will be able to access government systems via CY Login, using their eID credentials.

The National Electronic Identity of the Republic of Cyprus has already been approved by the European Commission at the highest level of security and recognition (“High Assurance”) under the eIDAS Regulation, registered under the name: IDMe.cy.
