Anthropic AI safety commitments are being tested as the company confronts mounting pressure to scale its business without compromising the ethical principles that helped define its brand.
The artificial intelligence firm has positioned safety as its core identity- advocating for AI regulation and worker protections while promoting itself as a more responsible alternative in a fast-moving industry. But the guardrails that built that reputation may now be limiting its commercial flexibility.
Pentagon pressure and policy shift
This week, the US Department of Defense reportedly delivered an ultimatum to Anthropic: remove certain ethical restrictions or risk losing a $200 million contract and facing potential blacklisting.
Separately, Anthropic announced it would loosen aspects of its core safety policy, allowing greater operational freedom as competition intensifies in the AI sector.
The outcome of these decisions remains uncertain. However, they are widely viewed as consequential for both Anthropic’s business prospects and its reputation.
Anthropic has said its safety commitments were always designed to be adaptable as AI technology evolves. It pledged continued transparency, arguing that if it slows down, competitors less focused on safety could dominate the market, potentially making AI development riskier overall.
Lessons from OpenAI
Anthropic’s dilemma echoes a high-profile crisis at its main rival, OpenAI, in November 2023.
In a dramatic boardroom dispute, OpenAI’s nonprofit board abruptly removed CEO Sam Altman over concerns that the company was moving too quickly at the expense of safety. Within days, however, employee backlash and fears of collapse led to Altman’s reinstatement. The board was later dissolved and the company restructured.
The episode underscored the difficulty of maintaining strong safety commitments while operating in a highly competitive and capital-intensive industry.
OpenAI has since faced legal challenges alleging harm linked to its products- claims the company denies- further illustrating the persistent tension between speed, scale and responsibility in AI development.
Tech industry precedents
Anthropic’s situation also reflects broader patterns in the technology sector.
In 2016, Apple refused a US court order to unlock an iPhone belonging to one of the San Bernardino shooters, arguing that creating a “backdoor” would endanger user privacy. Despite political backlash at the time, Apple’s stance reinforced its privacy-focused brand identity.
Similarly, Etsy faced criticism in 2013 when it allowed sellers to use manufacturers rather than exclusively offering handmade goods. Though controversial, the move enabled the platform to expand significantly, ultimately becoming a major e-commerce marketplace.
These examples illustrate how companies often face pivotal decisions that test whether stated values can survive commercial realities.
What comes next
Experts suggest that Anthropic’s immediate challenge lies in maintaining customer trust.
Owen Daniels, associate director of analysis at Georgetown University’s Center for Security and Emerging Technology, noted that clients’ perception of the company’s commitment to safety will be crucial.
Arun Sundararajan, director of NYU Stern’s Fubon Center for Technology, Business and Innovation, described the moment as potentially more significant for Anthropic’s brand than for the broader trajectory of AI safety.
He cautioned that many of AI’s long-term risks remain conceptual, and that the impact of policy adjustments is difficult to assess.
For now, Anthropic AI safety remains central to its identity, but the company’s ability to balance principle and growth may define its next chapter.
