Two ecological parties – the Animal Party and the newly registered Green Party – announced on Wednesday a full electoral alliance for the May 2026 parliamentary elections.
Speaking at a Nicosia press conference, the parties unveiled a joint platform built on the slogan “Human – Animals – Nature”, promising policies on cost-of-living relief, social housing, anti-corruption, animal welfare and green transition.
Key pledges
- Strict price controls on essentials and anti-oligopoly measures
- Mass social housing programmes and rent caps in high-pressure areas
- Zero tolerance for corruption and full transparency in public tenders
- Faster asylum procedures combined with tougher border controls
- Stronger animal cruelty laws and habitat protection
- Higher low pensions, targeted benefits and GESY reinforcement
The alliance openly challenges the traditional ecological space held by the Movement of Ecologists – Citizens’ Cooperation.
High-profile defection in a direct blow to the Ecologists, deputy leader Sotiris Christou resigned on Wednesday after only eight months in post and immediately joined the new alliance.
The Ecologists responded with a sharp statement claiming Christou “never exercised his duties” and repeatedly disrupted party operations. They stressed their own campaign continues “uninterrupted, with stability, transparency and unity”.
Christou fired back in a lengthy farewell post, insisting his move continues three decades of frontline ecological activism “without compromises” and urged citizens to rally behind a “clean green voice” in parliament.
With six months to go, the new alliance aims to cross the 3.6% threshold and enter parliament for the first time, potentially reshaping Cyprus’ green political landscape.
