The AKEL proposal to remove the time limit on housing loan interest subsidies paid by the Central Agency for Equal Distribution of Burdens (CAEDB) will go before Parliament’s plenary this Thursday, AKEL MP and Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Refugees Nikos Kettiros announced on Tuesday.
The same bill had reached the plenary last week but voting was postponed at that point.
Kettiros said that during the committee session, the government, through CAEDB Chairman Akis Pourou, declared full support for the proposal.
“However, because the government has no intention of hiring five extra officers to process applications, they say they cannot implement it,” Kettiros stated, calling the argument “nonsensical”.
“We expect the bill to be adopted in plenary next Thursday. There is no issue of unconstitutionality, we have submitted detailed legal reasoning and Supreme Court jurisprudence. We are confident the President will not be able to refer it back,” he concluded.
