Four arrested as police probe animal welfare case

A case involving turtle abuse in Paphos is under investigation by the Cyprus Police following the discovery of a dead turtle in a coastal area of the district.

According to police, four individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident, which falls under legislation for the protection and welfare of animals. Investigations are continuing, with the Animal Police Unit examining the circumstances and exact cause of death of the turtle.

Complaint led to immediate police action

The investigation into the turtle abuse in Paphos began after police received a complaint at around 1:30pm on Monday, January 12, reporting the mistreatment of a turtle by a group of individuals at a seaside location in the Paphos district.

Members of the police immediately went to the scene to carry out on-site examinations and collect information.

Dead turtle found at suspects’ workplace

Further inquiries in the wider area led to evidence identifying the suspected individuals. Police later located them at their workplace, where the dead turtle was also found.

The animal was taken into police custody for examination as part of the ongoing investigation.

Council response

The Chlorakas Community Council has expressed regret over the turtle abuse case being investigated by Paphos police, in which council employees are reportedly involved.

In an announcement, the Chlorakas Community Council said such practices do not align with its principles, values and way of operating.

The council said it will await the completion of police investigations as well as the results of scientific examinations by the competent departments.

Authorities have not yet announced further details, as inquiries remain active.
