Mossad agents reveal how they trapped Hezbollah pagers

Date:

Two former Mossad agents have disclosed details of the daring counterintelligence operation known as the “Pager Plot” in an interview with 60 Minutes. On 17 September 2024, Mossad successfully neutralised Hezbollah by selling the organisation thousands of rigged pager devices, marketed as advanced communication tools. When activated, the devices caused chaos and inflicted significant casualties.

The operation began over a decade ago, initially involving bugged transceivers. In 2022, the focus shifted to pagers, widely used by Hezbollah for their perceived security against interception. The pagers were modified to include explosive components without compromising their functionality.

On 17 September 2024, Mossad remotely detonated the explosive pagers, injuring approximately 3,000 Hezbollah fighters and killing 30. The operation aimed more at psychological warfare than sheer destruction, showcasing Mossad’s superiority in undermining adversaries.

Far-reaching impacts

The effects extended beyond Lebanon’s borders. The operation weakened Iran’s influence through Hezbollah, contributed to instability in Syria, and played a role in the downfall of the Assad regime. However, the mission raised ethical questions about Israel’s reputation and the broader implications of such tactics.

Mossad demonstrated its prowess in psychological warfare, leaving Hezbollah and other adversaries uncertain about its next move, amplifying the sense of vulnerability among its enemies.
