Palestinian President begins two-day visit to Cyprus

Date:

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas begins a two-day working visit to Cyprus today, Thursday, for talks with President Nikos Christodoulides on bilateral relations, regional developments and humanitarian assistance to Gaza.

Abbas will meet Christodoulides privately this morning, followed by a working lunch attended by the two presidents.

The discussions are expected to cover Cyprus’ humanitarian role in the region, the Amalthea maritime corridor for delivering aid to Gaza, relations between the European Union and Palestine, and the latest developments in the Cyprus issue.

Gaza aid and regional developments on agenda

The Amalthea maritime corridor is among the key issues expected to feature in the talks, alongside broader regional developments and bilateral relations.

The two presidents are also expected to discuss cooperation between the EU and Palestine, as well as the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

The visit comes as Cyprus continues to play a role in facilitating the delivery of humanitarian assistance to the Gaza Strip through the Amalthea initiative.

Third meeting between the two presidents

This is the third meeting between Abbas and Christodoulides since the latter was elected president of Cyprus.

Their previous meeting took place in Palestine in May 2025.
