Residence permits have been revoked for Pakistani nationals who took part in clashes in Mesa Geitonia, Limassol, on 15 October, following instructions from the Deputy Minister of Migration.
According to information from SigmaLive, some of those involved were already residing in the Republic illegally. Procedures have been launched in cooperation with the Police to expedite their removal from Cyprus.
Private college checks to be stepped up
Information obtained by SigmaLive indicates that almost all the Pakistani nationals involved were students at private colleges in Cyprus, with some having very low attendance records.
A source from the Deputy Ministry of Migration and International Protection said increased checks are now being carried out at private colleges in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and the Police.
Stricter rules for foreign students expected
Authorities are also expected to tighten the rules governing the registration and entry of foreign students.
The aim is to prevent the student residence system from being exploited, according to the source.
The measures follow the clashes in Mesa Geitonia on 15 October and form part of broader checks involving the relevant authorities.
