Final test results are expected next week to determine the source of Legionella bacteria linked to an infection in a newborn at a private clinic in Nicosia.
The clinic remains closed until the necessary checks of its water supply system have been completed.
Speaking to state radio, Michalis Mendris, a microbiologist with the State Health Services Organisation (OKYPY), said the results available so far are preliminary and do not allow safe conclusions to be drawn.
Investigations focus on water supply systems
Investigators are examining the water supply systems at both the private clinic and the family home where the newborn was taken after leaving the clinic.
Mendris said further analysis was needed before authorities could establish the source of the bacteria.
The clinic will remain closed until the required inspections and checks have been completed.
Newborn remains in critical condition
The newborn remains in critical condition and continues to receive mechanical respiratory support. No change in the baby’s condition has been recorded so far.
Mendris said no other cases had been identified to date, describing this as a positive development.
People who came into contact with the newborn are being monitored as a precaution while the investigation continues.
