Widespread violence, arson, looting and vandalism were reported across several French cities, from Paris and Marseille to Lyon and Limoges, during Saturday’s demonstrations.
According to the report, one protester died after suffering cardiac arrest, while a 27-year-old underwent an amputation.
Particularly extensive damage was reported at Limoges City Hall, where a fire caused the collapse of the bell tower and significant destruction to the building.
More than 1,200 people were detained, according to preliminary figures, which remain subject to revision.
French authorities are expected to release further information on the extent of the damage and police operations.
The country awoke on Sunday to scenes of shock and disappointment, with footage from the affected areas illustrating the scale of the unrest.
Limoges City Hall severely damaged
In Limoges, unidentified masked individuals reportedly entered City Hall and threatened employees before starting a fire.
The building sustained extensive damage, while the destruction of its bell tower became one of the most striking images of the night.
Widespread vandalism and looting were also reported in Paris, Marseille and Lyon, with attacks on shops reportedly continuing into the early hours of Sunday morning.
Authorities face criticism over handling of unrest
The incidents have prompted strong criticism of police preparedness and the Interior Ministry’s response.
Critics argue that the authorities underestimated the potential scale and intensity of the violence and destruction.
The Prime Minister, who visited security forces in Paris, warned that those responsible would face severe punishment.
He also stressed the need to establish accountability for the damage and pledged that the government would seek to support business owners whose premises had suffered significant losses.
Particular concern has been raised over attacks targeting shopkeepers who attempted to protect their property, especially at a time when businesses are anticipating increased sales ahead of the holiday season.
Police officers and protesters injured
Attacks against police officers were also reported during the unrest, with injuries recorded among both security personnel and young people involved in the clashes.
Videos reportedly filmed near Place de la République in Paris appear to show young people throwing heavy objects from a considerable height towards police officers.
In another incident, a young man attempting to smash the window of a luxury store was seriously injured when the structure collapsed on top of him.
French authorities are expected to provide further updates as investigations and assessments of the damage continue.
