British father fined €3,000 over son’s death in Cyprus

Date:

A British father has been fined €3,000 by Paphos District Court in connection with the death of his three-year-old son, who fell from a fourth-floor hotel window in Chloraka in July 2026.

The 37-year-old was released after the fine was imposed, according to Sigma correspondent Marios Ignatiou. The difference between the amount paid as bail and the sum required will be returned to him.

The father had admitted guilt in the case. During sentencing, the court considered mitigating factors presented by the defence, including his guilty plea, clean criminal record and the profound personal loss he had suffered.

Court describes incident as a momentary mistake

In explaining the decision, the court president described the incident as a “momentary mistake” that led to the tragedy, rather than a deliberate act.

She also noted that the events would remain with the father throughout his life.

The 37-year-old appeared visibly emotional as he waited for the sentence to be announced, with his parents and other relatives beside him. He was reportedly tearful as the court revisited the circumstances surrounding his son’s death.

After the sentence was delivered, relatives embraced him, while some broke down in tears.

Three-year-old died during family holiday

The tragedy occurred on 12 July 2026 at a hotel in Chloraka, Paphos district, while the family was holidaying in Cyprus.

The child fell from a window on the fourth floor of the hotel.

The case attracted considerable media attention in the United Kingdom. More than 10 journalists and other media representatives from abroad were present in the courtroom for the sentencing.

Defence cites guilty plea and personal loss

During the plea in mitigation, the defence asked the court to consider several factors, including the father’s admission of guilt, his clean criminal record and the devastating personal loss he had suffered.

The court subsequently imposed the €3,000 fine for the first charge.
