Cyprus needs a comprehensive, long-term demographic policy to address population decline, support families and encourage young people to build their futures on the island, the Cyprus Institute of Demographic and Migration Policy has said.
The issue was discussed at an event organised by the institute entitled “The Demographic Problem in the Republic of Cyprus: Challenges, Policies and Prospects”.
Deputy Minister of Social Welfare Tina Pavlou addressed the event, which was attended by representatives of the Presidency, the Hellenic Force in Cyprus (ELDYK), the Cyprus Police, the Greek Embassy in Cyprus, the University of Cyprus and other organisations.
Population decline and the future of young people
Discussions focused on the impact of demographic decline, the need for coordinated government policies and the relationship between population trends and national strength.
Participants also examined the factors prompting young people to seek professional and personal opportunities abroad.
The institute said the demographic issue went beyond changes in population figures, linking it to family support, employment prospects and the ability of young people to remain in Cyprus and build their lives there.
It also highlighted the importance of ensuring an adequate workforce and safeguarding the country’s long-term sustainability.
Call for coordinated government action
The institute said addressing demographic challenges required consistent political planning, cooperation between relevant institutions and policies that deliver measurable results.
It warned against relying on isolated measures, stressing the need for a coherent long-term strategy.
The institute said it would continue contributing to public debate through evidence-based proposals and initiatives aimed at shaping a comprehensive demographic policy for Cyprus.
