Pope Leo underwent surgery to remove part of right lung after cancer diagnosis

Date:

Pope Leo’s lung surgery was successful and concluded without complications, the Vatican press office announced, confirming that the pontiff underwent the removal of the lower lobe of his right lung following a diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma.

The Holy See said an endoscopic technique was used to remove the affected lung lobe. An immediate histological examination confirmed the diagnosis, which doctors had suspected based on tests conducted in recent days.

Surgery lasted 90 minutes

The operation lasted around 90 minutes, although Pope Leo spent approximately three hours in the operating theatre in total.

Shortly before being transferred to his room on the top floor of Rome’s Agostino Gemelli University Hospital, the Pope asked for his evening meal, according to the Vatican’s announcement.
