US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has described the prospect of a conflict between Greece and Turkey as “unthinkable”, including one arising over Cyprus, in an interview with Greek newspaper Kathimerini.
Rubio said Washington would work behind the scenes to prevent a potential crisis over the planned electricity interconnector between Greece and Cyprus, known as the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI).
He also said the US would emphasise to all parties how important the project is from Washington’s perspective.
US position on Turkey’s F-35 request
Addressing Turkey’s efforts to secure approval for the acquisition of F-35 fighter jets, Rubio said President Donald Trump would like Ankara to receive the aircraft it has already paid for.
However, he stressed that US legislation is clear and does not permit the transfer unless the dispute over Turkey’s purchase of Russian S-400 air defence missile systems is resolved first.
Greece seeks advanced missiles for F-35 fleet
Another key issue discussed in Athens on Wednesday was the Greek government’s intention to acquire advanced missiles for its own F-35 fighter jets.
Greece is seeking missiles comparable to those obtained by Israel.
