Christodoulides-Erhürman meeting set for October 13

Date:

The next meeting between President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman will take place on Tuesday, 13 October, at 3.30pm under the auspices of the United Nations.

Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis said in a post that the goal remains to achieve substantive progress towards the resumption of negotiations within the agreed framework.

The United Nations has continued to facilitate contacts between the two leaders as part of efforts to advance the Cyprus peace process.

Focus on resuming negotiations

According to Letymbiotis, the effort to achieve progress remains one to which UN Secretary-General António Guterres is personally committed.

The meeting follows Christodoulides’ request on Tuesday for a new meeting with Erhürman, with the President saying the aim was to continue discussions that began before the leaders travelled to New York and build on their discussions with Guterres.

The UN has previously said the two leaders agreed to intensify their meetings and meet weekly, with additional meetings when circumstances require.

The upcoming meeting comes as the two sides continue discussions on confidence-building measures, the methodology of the talks and their substance, issues identified by Guterres in connection with efforts to prepare for a broader five-plus-one meeting.
