The Spyros Kyprianou Arena in Polemidia has been officially approved as the Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball team’s home venue for its EuroLeague matches, replacing Serbia as its previous base.
Arena approved after inspection
An inspection involving representatives of the Cyprus Sports Organisation, Maccabi, the arena authorities and senior police officers found that the venue can meet the Israeli team’s requirements.
Security was highlighted as the main priority, with the number of spectators for Maccabi matches set below the arena’s full capacity.
Following renovations last year, the Spyros Kyprianou Arena can accommodate 6,000 spectators. However, only 5,000 fans will be allowed to attend Maccabi’s matches.
A very limited number of visiting supporters will also be permitted, subject to police approval.
Strict security measures
Fans attending Maccabi matches will not be allowed to bring personal belongings into the arena, according to the report.
The venue will be handed over to police 24 hours before each match. It will then be sealed and placed under police guard, with access restricted to Maccabi for training purposes.
The stands will also be separated, while everyone entering the arena will be required to hold a fan card.
The EuroLeague has requested several changes to the venue, including adjustments to the basketball hoops. These changes are expected to be completed in the coming days to allow the matches to take place.
Extra measures for Turkish teams
Particularly strict security measures and thorough checks are expected for Maccabi matches against the three Turkish teams in the EuroLeague: Fenerbahce, Besiktas and Anadolu Efes.
The arrangements are expected to involve enhanced policing and tighter controls around the venue.
