Cyprus is seeing heavy rain and hail in several areas on Tuesday afternoon, as a yellow weather warning remains in effect for strong thunderstorms.
Heavy rain and hail reported
Heavy rainfall began affecting parts of Cyprus from midday on Tuesday, 6 October, with hail also reported in some areas.
According to the warning issued by the Department of Meteorology, isolated strong thunderstorms are expected to affect the island, particularly mountainous areas, inland regions and parts of the north-west.
Rainfall intensity may locally exceed 35 millimetres per hour during thunderstorms.
Yellow warning in effect
The yellow warning came into force at 13:00 and will remain valid until 18:00 on Tuesday.
Hail may occur during thunderstorms, while winds are expected to change direction and strengthen.
Authorities are urging the public to exercise particular caution, especially in areas affected by thunderstorms.
Videos showed heavy rainfall in Moutoullas and Nicosia, while further footage from members of the Kairofiloi Kyprou weather enthusiasts group showed rain and hail in Engomi.
