Fuel prices recorded a significant increase in August 2026, with diesel prices rising by 11.3% and petrol prices by 6.2% compared with July, according to data published by Eurostat on Tuesday.
The increase in petrol prices in Cyprus was among the largest recorded in the EU. Higher increases were reported in Spain at 8.2%, Romania at 6.6% and Italy at 6.3%.
On an annual basis, prices for fuels and lubricants in Cyprus increased by 19.1%.
Petrol prices rise across most EU countries
Petrol prices increased between July and August in 22 EU countries, while they fell in three and remained unchanged in two.
Small declines were recorded in Hungary (-0.6%), Denmark (-0.3%) and Slovakia (-0.1%).
For diesel, prices increased in 26 EU countries. The largest monthly rises were recorded in Czechia (+14.3%), Bulgaria (+13.5%) and Luxembourg (+12.3%).
The smallest increases were recorded in Italy (+5.2%), Romania (+6.1%) and the Netherlands (+6.2%).
EU fuel prices climb further
Across the EU, diesel prices rose by 8.3% in August compared with July, while petrol prices increased by 3.3%.
In July, diesel prices had risen by 4.3% and petrol prices by 4.7% compared with June.
On an annual basis, Eurostat recorded a 23.8% increase in fuel and lubricant prices for personal transport in the EU in August 2026 compared with August 2025.
This followed annual increases of 13.7% in June and 16.9% in July.
Annual increases exceed 20% in 18 EU states
Fuel and lubricant prices were higher in August than a year earlier in 26 of the 27 EU member states.
Annual increases in August were also higher than those recorded in July in 26 countries and higher than June’s increases in 24 countries.
In 18 member states, annual increases exceeded 20%.
The largest increases were recorded in Bulgaria (+34.5%), Lithuania (+28.8%), Finland (+27.6%), Germany (+27.5%) and France (+27.4%).
The smallest increases were recorded in Hungary (+1.3%), Sweden (+6.1%) and Ireland (+11.7%).
