A group of Iranians living in the Republic of Cyprus held a gathering outside the Iranian Embassy in Nicosia on Saturday, marking the fourth anniversary of the death of Masha Amini.
Video of the demonstration was published by Iranian media outlet Kayhan London. Participants were seen opposite the embassy holding flags featuring the Lion and Sun emblem, photographs of people identified by organisers as victims and placards bearing the slogan “Woman, Life, Freedom”.
Portraits of former Iranian Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and his son, Reza Pahlavi, were also displayed during the gathering.
Banners honour victims
Footage from the demonstration shows a large banner featuring photographs of people whom organisers identified as victims of the Iranian authorities, alongside posters opposing executions.
Some participants used a microphone to chant slogans, while others held placards carrying messages including “Killed by Islamic Republic”.
According to Kayhan London, the gathering in Nicosia was also linked to events supporting Reza Pahlavi and the so-called “Lion and Sun national revolution”.
The same day, the “Cyrus the Great II” conference was held in Toronto, Canada, where Reza Pahlavi addressed attendees.
Four years since Amini’s death
Masha Amini, 22, died on 16 September 2022 after being detained by Iran’s morality police over allegations concerning her hijab. The United Nations says her death in custody triggered nationwide protests under the “Woman, Life, Freedom” slogan.
The protests spread across Iran and were also marked by members of the Iranian diaspora in countries around the world.
The UN Independent International Fact-Finding Mission has documented allegations of serious human rights violations in the context of the protests and has called for accountability for violations committed during the movement.
