30 flights and 5,000 passengers travelling to and from Cyprus affected by UK airport chaos

Date:

Flight disruptions affected 30 flights and around 5,000 passengers travelling to and from Larnaca and Paphos airports on Tuesday following technical problems with the UK air traffic control system.

According to sources from Hermes Airports, the situation remains dynamic and is expected to become clearer later today. Some flights that were not operated yesterday are expected to take place today.

30 flights affected at Cyprus airports

A total of 30 flights to and from Cyprus’ two main airports were affected by the disruption at UK airports.

Hermes Airports said 16 flights to and from Larnaca Airport and 14 flights to and from Paphos Airport were affected.

The disruption was linked to a technical failure in the air traffic control system in the UK, which caused widespread problems for flights.

Around 5,000 passengers affected

According to Hermes Airports sources who spoke to the Cyprus News Agency, around 5,000 passengers travelling to and from the two Cyprus airports were affected.

The sources stressed that “the situation is dynamic” and said some of the flights that did not operate yesterday are expected to be operated today.

Passengers are contacting their airlines to make arrangements for their journeys.

Despite the disruption, no overcrowding has been reported at Larnaca or Paphos airports.

Impact for today remains unclear

Hermes Airports said it is not currently possible to provide a reliable estimate of how many flights could be affected today.

The situation remains fluid, with the overall picture expected to become clearer later in the day.
