President: Hopeful for positive response from Tatar on checkpoints

Date:

President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, expressed hope for a positive response from the Turkish Cypriot leader regarding a potential meeting to discuss the opening of new checkpoints.

Speaking to journalists after a reception hosted by the United Nations in Cyprus at the Ledra Palace, the President was asked about his discussion during the event with Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar. He stated, “I conveyed what I mentioned earlier today in my remarks—that I am ready to meet even tomorrow to discuss the matter of opening new checkpoints.”

He added, “Preparations are being made by the negotiators, and while there are differing approaches to some issues, I emphasised the importance of meeting to review where we stand and to provide guidelines for negotiators on how to proceed. A meeting does not necessarily mean an announcement will follow.

“We should not be afraid to meet, especially given the commitments we have made to the UN Secretary-General.”

President Christodoulides further noted, “Mr Tatar said he would consider such a meeting and will respond. I hope his answer will be positive.”
