Cyprus has recorded its first death from West Nile virus this year, with a 90-year-old patient with underlying health conditions dying after contracting the infection.
Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), physician and infectious disease specialist Aristos Aristodemou confirmed the death.
He stressed that West Nile virus can cause an infection of the central nervous system and that “some patients may not make it”.
Ten cases identified
Aristodemou said that, as of Thursday evening, a total of 10 cases had been identified in Cyprus.
Seven of the cases have been confirmed, while three are considered probable.
Of the confirmed cases, four patients are currently hospitalised.
Prevention measures underway
Aristodemou said prevention measures are taken from the outset whenever a case is reported.
These include contact tracing, spraying and door-to-door checks to identify and eliminate mosquito breeding sites.
The measures are repeated when necessary, he said.
The majority of cases have been detected in Nicosia district.
