Christodoulides-Costa meeting: EU role in Cyprus talks

Date:

European Council President António Costa is meeting President Nikos Christodoulides at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia on Friday as part of his tour of EU member state capitals.

The two leaders are expected to make statements to the media at 10:35am.

Cyprus issue high on agenda

The visit comes at an important period for the European Union and at a critical juncture in efforts to resume meaningful negotiations on the Cyprus issue, Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis said during a briefing on Thursday.

The resumption of negotiations to resolve the Cyprus issue remains a top priority for the Republic of Cyprus, with efforts and initiatives in this direction continuing consistently.

During their private meeting, President Christodoulides briefed Costa on the latest developments regarding the Cyprus issue and efforts to restart negotiations.

The European Union can play a decisive role in these efforts through enhanced political engagement, which the Republic of Cyprus has sought from the outset.

Particular reference was made to the appointment of European Commission Executive Vice-President for Cohesion and Reforms Raffaele Fitto as the EU Special Envoy for the Cyprus issue.

EU budget also discussed

The leaders also discussed the EU’s new Multiannual Financial Framework for 2028-2034.

According to the Presidency, Cyprus worked intensively on the issue during its presidency of the Council of the EU and delivered a mature framework, laying the foundations for the final stage of political negotiations.

The aim is to reach an agreement on the EU budget framework by the end of 2026.
