Petrol prices place Cyprus among the cheaper markets in the European Union, ranking 22nd among the 27 member states when countries are ranked from the most expensive to the cheapest.
In other words, only five EU countries have a lower average price for unleaded petrol.
The latest available figures, based on the European Commission’s Weekly Oil Bulletin, put the price of 95-octane unleaded petrol in Cyprus at around €1.595 per litre, below the European average.
The figures contrast with comments made by Finance Minister Makis Keravnos on Tuesday that Cyprus has the cheapest petrol in the EU after Bulgaria. The statement prompted criticism from AKEL.
Prices at Cypriot petrol stations
Market data for September 2, 2026 show an average petrol price of around €1.607 per litre in Cyprus, with the lowest prices starting at approximately €1.535.
Prices vary between petrol stations and regions, with current figures ranging from around €1.535 to €1.669 per litre.
At the average price, filling a 50-litre tank costs approximately €80.35.
At the lowest available price, the same 50-litre fill-up would cost around €76.75, a difference of almost €3.60.
Diesel tells a different story
Cyprus’ relatively favourable position in the petrol rankings does not necessarily apply to all fuel products.
Diesel prices in Cyprus have at times been above the European average, prompting debate over how fuel prices are determined in the local market.
The final price at the pump depends on more than international oil prices. Taxes, import, refining and transport costs, as well as local market conditions, all affect the amount paid by consumers.
Oil market remains closely watched
International developments in the oil market could quickly feed through to fuel prices in Cyprus in the coming period.
The European Commission monitors fuel prices across EU member states weekly through its Weekly Oil Bulletin, providing comparable data for petrol, diesel and other petroleum products.
Overall, petrol prices remain in the cheaper part of the EU market, with the average price standing at around €1.60 per litre, although significant differences remain between petrol stations.
