An unexplained increase in reports of flights in Nicosia has been recorded in recent days, with dozens of residents contacting SigmaLive on Monday to report seeing aircraft and helicopters over various parts of the capital.
Acting Director of the Department of Civil Aviation Haris Antoniades told SigmaLive that there was no reason for concern, describing the flights as a common phenomenon rather than something new.
Flights not linked to Kyrenia shipwreck
Antoniades stressed that the flights were not connected to the Kyrenia shipwreck.
He explained that the aircraft were operating over the occupied areas, even if they appeared to be over the government-controlled areas because of the distances involved.
The Department of Civil Aviation received dozens of calls from members of the public regarding the reported Nicosia flights.
Antoniades said he could not explain the heightened concern among residents, given that the phenomenon was not new.
No unusual radar activity recorded
SigmaLive also followed up on the issue on Tuesday, September 1, but there were no new developments.
According to competent sources, no unusual activity had been recorded on radar.
