EU Presidency: Cyprus proves its role as EU–Middle East bridge

Date:

The Cyprus EU Presidency highlighted the country’s distinctive geopolitical role as a bridge between the European Union and the Middle East and wider region, the Presidency of the Republic of Cyprus said in a post.

“Cyprus, as an honest broker among the 27 member states, with consistency, credibility and commitment to the common European interest, demonstrated in practice that the size of a state does not determine the role it can play in the European Union,” the Presidency said.

The post was accompanied by a video featuring highlights from the Cyprus EU Presidency.

Presidency faced major challenges

The Presidency of the EU coincided with a period of “unprecedented geopolitical uncertainty” and major challenges for Europe, the statement said.

During this period, Cyprus was called upon to manage complex issues, promote solutions and contribute to critical decisions among the member states.

Cyprus’ role strengthened

The EU Presidency brought the country to the centre of European affairs, “strengthening the credibility and political capital of the Republic of Cyprus and upgrading the country’s position at European and international level”, the Presidency said.

At the same time, it highlighted Cyprus’ distinctive geopolitical role as a bridge between the European Union, the Middle East and the wider region.
