Limassol: Young swimmers nearly drown while retrieving ball

Date:

Two young swimmers were rescued after strong winds and sea currents swept them into deeper waters off Limassol while they were trying to retrieve a ball.

The incident happened at around 4:15 pm on Monday, 10 August, in the LEM 0 lifeguarded area opposite Limassol Zoo.

Lifeguards rushed to swimmers

According to the Limassol Lifeguard Unit, an 18-year-old couple of African origin were swimming inside the supervised area when their ball was carried away by the wind.

The pair attempted to retrieve it but were swept by strong winds and currents towards an area where the water became sharply deeper.

The two lifeguards stationed at LEM 0 immediately spotted the danger and rushed to the swimmers using a rescue board.

One lifeguard managed to safely bring both swimmers onto the board and began towing them towards the shore.

Second lifeguard joins rescue

Due to the difficult sea conditions, the second lifeguard immediately joined the rescue.

The two lifeguards worked together to tow the board back to shore, bringing both swimmers safely and quickly to land.

After they were brought ashore, both were found to be in good condition and did not require medical or hospital treatment.

Lifeguards urge caution

Following the incident, the Limassol Lifeguard Unit urged swimmers to exercise particular caution while in the sea and follow lifeguards’ instructions.

Swimmers are also advised not to leave supervised areas to retrieve objects carried away by wind or currents, particularly when weather and sea conditions are unfavourable.
