Weather forecast: Yellow warning for 40°C heat from 2pm

Date:

A yellow warning for high temperatures will come into force in Cyprus on Tuesday, with temperatures expected to reach 40°C inland before the weather becomes more unsettled later in the week.

The Department of Meteorology said the warning will be in effect from 2pm until 4pm.

Tuesday will begin mainly clear, although isolated rain is expected in the mountains during the afternoon as cloud cover increases locally.

Temperatures to reach 40°C inland

Seasonal low pressure is affecting the region.

Temperatures will rise to around 40°C inland, 31°C on the western and south-western coasts, 35°C along the remaining coastal areas and 30°C in the higher mountains.

Winds will initially be light and variable at 3 Beaufort, gradually becoming south-westerly to north-westerly and light to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort.

Along the southern and south-western coasts, winds could become locally strong during the afternoon at 4 to 5 Beaufort. The sea will be slight.

Clear night with temperatures staying warm

Tuesday night will remain mainly clear, although increased low cloud is expected at times, particularly in western areas.

Winds will later become mainly north-westerly to north-easterly and light at up to 3 Beaufort, while the sea will be calm to slight.

Temperatures will fall to around 23°C inland, 24°C along the coast and 20°C in the higher mountains.

Rain chances increase from Wednesday

The Cyprus weather forecast becomes increasingly unsettled during the second half of the week.

Locally increased afternoon cloud on Wednesday and Thursday is very likely to bring isolated rain to the mountains.

A greater change is expected on Friday, when isolated rain and a thunderstorm are forecast in the mountains, with showers also possible in an inland area.

Temperatures are not expected to change significantly through Thursday. A slight drop is forecast for Friday, bringing temperatures closer to the climatological average.
