4-year-old’s meningitis death: Police investigation underway

Date:

The State Health Services Organisation (OKYPY) has responded to today’s Limassol hospital protest concerning the treatment of a four-year-old child with viral meningitis.

OKYPY said it understands the pain of the child’s family and relatives and their desire for answers, while reiterating that investigations into the case are ongoing.

A police investigation is currently underway to establish the facts of the case. As part of the process, statements have already been taken from staff involved in the incident.

At the same time, OKYPY said its internal investigation is continuing in accordance with the organisation’s procedures and applicable regulations.

OKYPY stresses presumption of innocence

OKYPY stressed that the rule of law must be respected while the case is being investigated, including the presumption of innocence until the relevant procedures have been completed.

The organisation called for any characterisations or conclusions about those involved to be avoided before the investigations are concluded.

OKYPY said it is cooperating fully with the competent authorities and providing all necessary assistance for any independent investigation.

Commitment to transparency and accountability

The organisation said that, as a public-law body with accredited services and strict quality-assurance procedures, it applies mechanisms designed to ensure the immediate, impartial and objective investigation of every allegation or complaint.

OKYPY said it remains committed to transparency, accountability and the protection of the rights of both patients and healthcare professionals.

It added that every complaint is investigated with due seriousness, without prejudice or interference.
