A shocking case has emerged in Mystra, Laconia, Greece, after authorities discovered the body of a 90-year-old man inside a freezer at his family’s closed hotel.
The man’s 55-year-old son was arrested and later admitted that he had hidden his father’s body in the freezer for at least two and a half years in order to continue receiving pension payments.
According to Greek media reports, the son claimed he had kept the body hidden so he could collect both his father’s pension and his late mother’s pension.
However, residents in the area have questioned his account, saying they had not seen the elderly man for four to five years.
Son faces fraud and weapons charges
Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances and exact timing of the elderly man’s death.
A case file has been opened against the 55-year-old for repeated fraud, making a false statement and violating weapons legislation.
The preliminary investigation is being carried out by the Sparti Crime Investigation Department.
Greek police said: “A male body was found inside a freezer, belonging to the deceased 90-year-old man.”
Investigation began after missing person report
The case came to light after police received information that the elderly man, born in 1936, had not appeared for a long period.
During the investigation, officers questioned his son, who claimed that his father had left and was living in Athens.
Police checked the claim and contacted the man’s daughter, who lives in Athens. She reportedly told authorities that she had not seen her father for years and that he had been living with her brother.
Authorities investigate time of death
The main question now concerns when the 90-year-old died.
The arrested man reportedly told authorities that his father had died from natural causes around two and a half years ago and that he concealed the death in order to continue receiving his pension.
However, local residents have provided different accounts, saying they had not seen the elderly man for at least four or five years.
A forensic examination and autopsy are expected to provide answers about the exact time and cause of death.
