Residents of Limassol Marina say they have reached a breaking point after almost five years of what they describe as severe disruption caused by noise from a nearby seaside entertainment venue.
The Limassol Marina noise dispute has intensified following the release of a new independent environmental study, which found that music and other sound emissions continue to cause “very high noise disturbance” in neighbouring homes despite measures introduced to reduce the problem.
Study records high noise levels
According to the findings of the study, noise levels recorded inside nearby residences were significantly above the area’s natural acoustic environment.
The report classified the difference as a case of very high disturbance and noted that the impact exceeds the levels allowed under legislation governing sound emissions from entertainment venues.
Residents say their daily lives have become extremely difficult, claiming they are unable to rest, sleep or enjoy their homes despite living in one of Cyprus’ highest-value residential areas.
Residents accuse authorities of inaction
Residents said they have repeatedly contacted the relevant authorities over the years, requesting enforcement of the law and protection of their quality of life.
They claim that despite numerous complaints and interventions, the issue has not been effectively addressed, forcing them to take legal action.
They argue that the case highlights the inability of authorities to enforce existing regulations and protect citizens, despite scientific findings documenting the noise impact.
The affected residents are now calling on the relevant services to take immediate action, carry out meaningful inspections and ensure their right to live in peace and safety.
Expert says noise levels exceed legal limits
Speaking to SigmaLive, noise pollution consultant Michalis Loizidis, who carried out the study, said the area presents “very serious and specific issues” that must be addressed.
He said the homes in the area were purchased for a particular lifestyle, with residents choosing the location to enjoy comfort and tranquillity.
“The only thing they should have been hearing was the sound of the waves. Instead, they are experiencing daily noise torture,” he said.
Loizidis added that while engineers and architects had created a high-quality residential environment with quiet cafés and restaurants, the atmosphere had been disrupted by a recently opened club.
External speakers raise concerns
The consultant claimed that the club operates external speakers, which he said are expressly prohibited in that part of Limassol Marina.
“I carried out sound measurements in the area. The legislation states that external sound should not exceed three decibels above the sound level of homes. However, the measurements showed a difference of 20 decibels,” he said.
According to Loizidis, the levels recorded are outside both legal and reasonable limits.
He added that one resident had built a 20 to 30-metre wall in an attempt to reduce the noise, but without any significant result.
“You cannot treat a guest who is staying there and spending their holidays in this way,” he said.
