For decades, fillings, crowns and dental implants have been the standard treatment for damaged or missing teeth. Now, advances in regenerative medicine are bringing researchers closer to a future where tooth regeneration could replace many traditional dental procedures.
Scientists around the world are developing techniques that could enable damaged teeth to repair themselves or even allow entirely new teeth to grow naturally, offering a biological alternative to synthetic materials.
Why teeth matter more than many realise
Researchers say oral health has a significant impact on overall health. Gum disease has been linked to increased risks of heart disease, respiratory infections and even Alzheimer’s disease, while tooth loss can affect nutrition, speech, confidence and quality of life.
Current treatments help restore function, but they cannot fully recreate the structure and biological properties of a natural tooth.
Living fillings and self-healing teeth
Scientists are investigating ways to stimulate teeth to repair themselves.
One area of research focuses on dentine, the layer beneath tooth enamel. Researchers are studying proteins involved in natural dentine formation in the hope of encouraging damaged teeth to regenerate tissue instead of requiring conventional fillings.
Another promising approach involves so-called “living fillings”. Scientists have successfully used stem cells to create tooth organoids capable of producing enamel proteins in laboratory conditions. In the future, these proteins could help repair cracked or damaged teeth more naturally than current materials.
Ultimately, researchers hope engineered cells could one day be placed directly into a patient’s mouth to grow a replacement tooth.
Growing replacement teeth
Dental implants have transformed treatment for missing teeth, but they still have limitations. Unlike natural teeth, implants lack nerves, making it difficult to sense pressure while chewing. They also require artificial crowns that typically need replacement after several years.
Researchers believe tooth regeneration could provide a longer-lasting solution.
Teams in the UK and the United States have already produced early tooth-like structures in laboratories by combining different types of cells and using bioengineered scaffolds that mimic natural tooth development.
Some experiments have even successfully grown developing tooth structures in animals, demonstrating that biological replacement teeth may eventually become possible.
Still years away from patients
Despite encouraging progress, experts caution that regenerative dentistry remains in the experimental stage.
More laboratory studies, animal testing and clinical trials will be required before treatments become widely available.
However, scientists believe the research has implications beyond dentistry, improving understanding of how hard and soft tissues develop together and potentially contributing to future advances in regenerative medicine for bones and organs.
Although patients are unlikely to benefit in the immediate future, researchers remain optimistic that tooth regeneration will eventually transform dental care by allowing damaged or missing teeth to heal or regrow naturally.
