A weather warning issued by the Department of Meteorology comes into effect today, with temperatures expected to reach 40°C inland.
The yellow warning will be in force from 2:00 pm until 4:30 pm, as hot conditions continue to affect the island.
Temperatures remain above seasonal averages
The Meteorological Department said seasonal low pressure is affecting the region.
Today’s weather will be mainly clear, with light to moderate winds initially blowing from the northeast to southeast at force 3, locally up to force 4 on the Beaufort scale. During the afternoon, winds will gradually become southwesterly to northwesterly at force 3 to 4, reaching force 5 at times along southern coastal areas.
The sea will be slight to a little rough.
Maximum temperatures will reach around 40°C inland, 33°C along the western and southwestern coasts, 36°C elsewhere on the coast, and 29°C in the higher mountains.
Clear skies continue through the weekend
Tonight, conditions will remain mostly clear, with northwesterly to northeasterly winds at force 3, occasionally increasing to force 4 in some areas. The sea will remain slight to a little rough.
Minimum temperatures will fall to around 25°C inland, 25°C along the eastern and southeastern coasts, 24°C elsewhere on the coast and 20°C in the higher mountains.
The forecast for Thursday, Friday and Saturday remains mainly clear, with temperatures expected to stay above the seasonal average.
The weather warning remains in effect for the afternoon, with authorities advising the public to take precautions during the hottest part of the day.
