The Ministry of Justice and Public Order is moving forward with a comprehensive motorway response programme following Thursday’s seven-hour closure of the Nicosia–Limassol motorway after a lorry overturned.
In a statement, the ministry said the incident caused major disruption for thousands of motorists and highlighted the need to strengthen the operational readiness of the Police and other state services to restore traffic more quickly, particularly on motorways.
Special teams in every district
The ministry said that, under the instructions of the Minister of Justice and Public Order, specialised rapid response teams will be established in every district.
The teams will include the Police, the Fire Service and, where necessary, specialised private-sector operators.
Their primary objective will be the swift removal of obstacles and the reopening of motorways in the shortest possible time.
Better traffic management
The ministry also stressed the importance of timely public information from the Police through the media and social media platforms.
It added that the Traffic Police will implement organised diversion plans to redirect motorists safely onto alternative routes whenever serious incidents occur.
Funding for equipment
The Ministry of Justice and Public Order said it will immediately seek the necessary funding based on the needs identified by the Police and the Fire Service.
The funding will be used to equip the new rapid response teams so they can operate effectively across all districts.
