Cyprus’ electricity demand is expected to be fully met on Friday, with sufficient reserve capacity available to maintain the stability of the power system despite a temporary outage at the Dhekelia Power Station.
Haris Zavallis, Assistant Director of the Transmission System Operator of Cyprus’ Energy Control Centre (TSOC), told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) that conditions in the electricity system were favourable and that both demand and the required operating reserves would be covered throughout the day.
Dhekelia unit returns to service
Zavallis said available conventional generation stood at 1,188MW on Friday morning and was expected to rise to 1,248MW later in the day with the return of a 60MW generating unit at Dhekelia.
He explained that the unit, which had been brought back online earlier on Thursday, was taken out of service again later that evening after developing a technical fault currently under investigation by the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC).
Peak electricity demand forecast
The midday electricity demand peak, between 2pm and 4pm, is forecast to reach 1,320MW, while evening demand between 7pm and 9:30pm is expected to peak at around 1,065MW.
Zavallis said the forecast remains positive regardless of the availability of the Dhekelia unit.
System expected to remain stable
He stressed that Friday’s electricity demand would be fully covered while maintaining the necessary reserve capacity, ensuring the continued stability and reliability of the electricity system.
