A sea rescue operation saved four swimmers as lifeguards rushed to the rescue when they became trapped between breakwaters off the Limassol seafront, with one man hospitalised after swallowing a large amount of sea water.
The incident occurred at around 7pm on Thursday, 23 July, in the LEM15 lifeguard zone at Limassol Molos, near the “Thalassaki” area.
Lifeguards respond within minutes
According to the Limassol Lifeguard Unit, on-duty lifeguards spotted four people calling for help while stranded between two breakwaters.
They immediately launched a rescue operation using a jet ski and found two people struggling against the waves. A short distance away, two foreign nationals were also in difficulty, with one attempting to keep his exhausted friend afloat.
Lifeguards pulled the distressed swimmer from the water and brought him safely to shore, where they administered first aid before an ambulance transported him to Limassol General Hospital.
The man regained consciousness but had swallowed a significant amount of seawater and was admitted for further medical examination.
Extended patrol hours highlighted
The Limassol Lifeguard Unit noted that LEM15 is one of only two lifeguard stations in the district operating extended summer hours, providing cover from 6am until 8pm.
Most other lifeguard stations operate between 10:30am and 6pm.
The unit urged the public to swim only in designated lifeguarded areas and to follow safety advice, particularly when sea conditions become challenging.
