Police carried out nationwide scrap metal inspections on Wednesday, targeting businesses involved in the trade of used metals, with the participation of several government departments and agencies.
The operation involved officers from the Police, the Department of Environment, the Labour Inspection Department, the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) and other competent state services.
During the operation, authorities inspected 20 premises across Cyprus.
Officials seized more than 1,000 kilograms of cables which, following examination by EAC personnel, were identified as cables used by the authority.
Licensing and labour violations detected
The scrap metal inspections also uncovered several regulatory breaches.
Three businesses were reported for offences including waste management without the required licence and operating a scrap metal trading business without the necessary permit.
At one premises, officers arrested a person who was residing illegally in the Republic of Cyprus.
The employer was issued with an administrative fine of €4,000 by the Labour Inspection Department for undeclared employment.
Investigations continue
At another premises, inspectors identified the illegal employment of a second worker, resulting in a further €4,000 administrative fine for undeclared work.
Police said investigations into the scrap metal inspections are ongoing.
