Police in Paphos are expected to submit the case file on Friday to the Law Office in connection with the death of a three-year-old boy who died after falling from the fourth floor of a hotel in Chloraka.

Assistant Paphos Police Operations Director and police spokesperson Michalis Nikolaou told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) that investigators have completed most of their inquiries and will seek instructions from the Law Office on how to proceed.

Nikolaou said authorities are considering filing the case before a court even before the current detention order for the child’s 37-year-old father expires next Tuesday.

However, according to CNA information, the most likely scenario is that the father will be released under strict conditions.

Father seeks immediate release

Nikolaou also confirmed that laboratory test results are still pending.

Meanwhile, the child’s father, who remains in custody, has submitted a request for immediate release through his lawyer.

According to a letter published by newspaper Phileleftheros, the defence argues that continued detention no longer serves any investigative purpose and is placing further strain on the father’s psychological condition.

The letter also states that the 37-year-old wishes to be released so that he and his wife can tell their five-year-old daughter about the family tragedy. So far, they have only informed her that her younger brother is in hospital.

The defence added that the father does not object to strict bail conditions to ensure his appearance before the Paphos District Court.

Charges under investigation

The tragedy occurred at around 6 pm on Sunday when the three-year-old, who was staying with his parents at a hotel in Paphos district, fell from the building’s fourth floor.

Police are investigating the father on suspicion of causing death through a reckless, careless or dangerous act, neglect of duty as head of the family, and failure to fulfil his responsibilities as a person responsible for another individual.

According to police and the findings of the post-mortem examination carried out by forensic pathologists Dr Angeliki Papetta and Orthodoxos Orthodoxou, the child died from severe traumatic brain injuries and multiple injuries to the body and vital organs caused by the fall from height.

Hotel bears no responsibility

Meanwhile, Paphos Hoteliers Association president Evripides Loizides said the hotel bears no responsibility for the tragic incident in which the three-year-old boy lost his life.

He maintained that the circumstances of the incident do not indicate any liability on the part of the hotel.
