Yellow warning issued as thunderstorms threaten Cyprus

Date:

Alert remains in force until 6pm

The Department of Meteorology has issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms for Wednesday, valid from 11:00 until 18:00, as unstable weather conditions continue to affect Cyprus for a third consecutive day.

According to the forecast, isolated strong thunderstorms are expected to develop mainly over the mountains and inland areas during the afternoon. Some storms may also be accompanied by hail.

Seasonal low pressure and unstable atmospheric conditions continue to influence the region, bringing the risk of locally heavy downpours and thunderstorms.

Afternoon storms expected

Most parts of the island will start the day mainly clear, with periods of increased cloud. However, from around midday onwards, cloud build-up over the mountains and inland is expected to trigger isolated showers and thunderstorms.

Southwesterly to northwesterly winds will blow at 3 to 4 Beaufort, gradually strengthening along the coast to 4 to 5 Beaufort, with occasional stronger gusts. The sea will be generally slight.

Temperatures will reach around 36°C inland, 30°C along the west coast, 32°C in the remaining coastal areas and 24°C over the highest mountains.

Fog possible overnight

Tonight, skies will remain mostly clear, although periods of low cloud are expected, mainly along the coast. Later and into the early morning, patches of mist or fog may form, particularly across southern, eastern and inland areas.

Winds will gradually become light and downslope at around 3 Beaufort. The sea will be calm to slight, although it will remain slightly rough in western coastal areas.

Overnight temperatures will fall to around 23°C inland and along the coast, and to 17°C in the highest mountainous areas.

Unsettled conditions continue

Similar weather is expected on Thursday and Friday, with mainly fine conditions giving way to increased cloud during the afternoon. Isolated showers are expected over the mountains, while a brief thunderstorm cannot be ruled out, particularly inland.

Saturday will be mainly fine with occasional increased cloud.

Temperatures are expected to remain close to seasonal averages through Friday before rising slightly on Saturday.
